Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) & ACell

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a substance we use to enhance the outcome of a variety of our medical procedures. While PRP is used in a variety of cosmetic procedures, it has proven exceptionally beneficial for hair transplants and slowing the progression of hair loss.

ACell Matristem Micromatrix (ACell) is a granular powder that consists of the acellular portion of the porcine bladder matrix. Acellular simply means that the substance has had the cells removed. Generally ACell is used in reconstructive surgery to rebuild loss tissues. However, when combined with PRP treatment, ACell injections can enhance the effects of Platelet-Rich Plasma and stimulate additional hair growth.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

As the name implies, PRP is simply a mixture of blood plasma that has additional platelets, growth factors, and cytokines mixed in. PRP is always prepared from the patient’s own blood sample. The volume of natural platelets, growth factors, and cytokines makes platelet-rich-plasma an ideal addition to any procedure that might require an enhanced healing process.

Platelet Rich Plasma Uses in Hair Transplant Procedures

When it comes to treating hair loss, PRP can be used in 1 of 2 very interesting ways:

  • Stand-alone Platelet-Rich Plasma & ACell Treatment
    In some studies (Role of Platelet-rich Plasma in the Management of Androgenetic Alopecia.), PRP has demonstrated an ability to reverse hair follicle miniaturization (called “androgenic alopecia”, the number 1 cause of hair loss). Scientists currently believe that PRP accomplishes this by nurturing hair follicles with critical growth factors that take them from a dormant state (in which hair is no longer growing) to an active state (in which hair growth is occurring).
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma in Conjunction with Hair Restoration
    Dr. Darling has seen excellent results when using PRP with other hair restoration procedures. When performing hair transplants, many patients experience shorter recovery times with minimal inflammation and post-operative scarring.

General Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma & Cell Treatment

PRP and ACell injections have had numerous positive effects on patients. These include:

  • Shorter recovery times post-transplant;
  • Transplanted follicles “take” and recover faster;
  • Less inflammation and irritation after procedure;
  • Improved hair growth in recipient area (restored area of scalp);
  • Less inflammation as a result of surgery.
