Dandruff

Normally the constant shedding and renewal of the top layer of the skin all over the body are unnoticeable. However, on the scalp, the hair can trap the skin scales, making them more visible. About half the population suffers from dandruff. Regular washing with medicated shampoo can treat this condition. Creams and lotions may be necessary in conjunction.

Itching

The following disorders can cause itchy scalp with or without scaling:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Sensitive skin
  • Atopic dermatitis or
  • Common Tinea capitis (dandruff)
  • Other rare skin conditions

Middle-aged people often have to itch without an obvious cause. The regular use of medicated shampoo is often all it takes to alleviate the itching and sores caused by scratching.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

In contrast to dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp is often inflamed, causing a red, itchy and scaly scalp. It can affect the scalp, face, ears, eyebrows, beard area and central chest. Most people will be affected by seborrheic dermatitis at some stage in life. Stress and a number of illnesses can worsen this condition. Treatment consists of a combination of medicated shampoo and medication applied directly to the skin.

Psoriasis

This hereditary, generalized skin disease affects about 1-2% of the population. It is usually very mild and often confined to scalp, knees, and elbows. On the scalp, psoriasis often occurs in small, confined patches of very itchy, thick, reddish scaling, as opposed to seborrheic dermatitis, which tends to involve the entire scalp. Treatment of psoriasis of the scalp consists generally of the use of a medicated shampoo in addition to medicine directly applied to the scalp.

If you are struggling with any of these scalp issues, contact the Total Skin Center located near Kansas City today to get the treatment you need to be free of dandruff.
